Mexico Sailing

The warm waters and sunny weather of the Mexican coast brings many sailors to the country. Sailing in Mexico is one of the best places in the world because of this weather and the waves! There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to sailing there so here is a quick guide to Mexico sailing!

• Your boat: Your boat should be the first consideration that you take when you plan your sailing trip. Your boat quality is much more important then the size so make sure your boat is designed and built for ocean sailing. There are many sailboats that were built primarily for the lakes so make sure the boat you buy or rent is supposed to be on the ocean. The waves are the biggest consideration when it comes to ocean driving and Mexico sailing could prove dangerous if you pick the wrong vehicle. Many people pick trailerable boats that weren’t made for ocean sailing. There are parts of the ocean where trailerable boats can be driven but for the most part it would be better to pick out an ocean sailboat.

No matter which type of sailboat you pick out and decide to take out on the Mexican waters there are a couple of things you will want to remember. Check the boats basics- features, systems, emergency gear and working parts. If you have to, get a boat mechanic to check out your sailboat because of course, it would be better to get any issues dealt with right away- rather then when you’re out on the ocean!

• Insurance: When you try out Mexican sailing you will want to consider getting insurance on your sailboat. There are two main types of boat insurance that you can get. The first type of boat insurance covers you if you get blown to the beach, lose the boat’s mast or get holed up by a reef. As long as you have a boat in decent shape you shouldn’t have a hard time getting this insurance. The better your boats shape, the less of a fee you will most likely have to pay. The second type of insurance you can get deals with Mexican liability. Any type of accident that could happen between you and your boat or you and another boat will be covered as long as you have this second type of insurance. If you get into a problem and don’t have this insurance then you may have to spend a night in jail!

• Stuff to take: If you can afford it you should look to get some of this gear when you check out Mexico sailing. You can take things like GPS equipment, light air headsail, cruising guides, cockpit shading, radars and electric windlass. You will also want to be sure to take personal identification, passports, driver’s license and boat documents (including title).
